exploring and celebrating the role of action and art in faith.

series:family curse

I think humans are fascinated with curses, the fearful unknown and the powerlessness we feel in face of adversity and hardship we can’t really account for.  I also think we relate to our problems and misfortunes as somehow arising from our family of origins.  We often describe ourselves in relation to our family, “we fought a lot in my family,” or “we avoided talking about issues,” as if the problems we experience had their origins within our immediate family history.

I have also seen how we often make matters worse by our attempts to contain, subdue, ignore or overcome these “curses” we see localized in our family.  I am of course not in any way opposed to overcoming hardships, just that what we often call success is just masking the issue or ignoring it all together.

So these pieces explore the curse, distant and at once immediate, more ancient and encompassing then we know.  The pieces attempt to capture the images and material culture of a few generations back, grandparents and great grandparents, but illustrate a more original source for the curse.
